For the last two years, before school starts, I have read Homeschool Supermom…Not! (When Grace Meets Homeschooling) by Susan Kemmerer. Kemmerer is a homeschooling mom of nine children who candidly and humorously invites us into her world. The encouragement she gives through Scripture to meet the everyday struggles of homeschooling is a blessing to me. She explodes the “supermom” myth, gives tips on patience, marriage, organization and “grace-drenched homeschooling”. Some of her advice can be difficult to embrace and I may not agree with every aspect of her philosophy, but she challenges me to be the mother and wife that God wants me to be. As she says, “The reality is that God has called us to educate our children. If you are at all like me and my friends, once you accepted the call to homeschool, it didn’t take long for you to realize that you are being called to something beyond your capabilities, competence, or courage. Please remember that this is God’s sovereign design. He will use homeschooling to reveal His glory and to conform you to His image.” If anyone has doubts or frustrations about this school season, this book can help you feel like you’re not alone in this wonderful adventure!
